The Ophite Diagram: The Gate Passwords
A second-century sect drew a map of the levels above the world and wrote out what you say to the thing guarding each one. We only have it because a pagan critic described it in order to mock it, and a Christian critic quoted the mockery in order to answer it. Here is the document itself, invented.

This article is fiction. The Ophite Diagram was a real second-century object described by the pagan philosopher Celsus and reported at length by Origen in Against Celsus, book six, including its circles, its seven animal-faced archons and the formulas the soul was to speak at each gate. The diagram itself does not survive. The operator's document below was written for this article and is not an ancient source.
The hole
This one was never buried, so it was never dug up. It was simply used until it stopped being used, and then it was gone.
Around the year 178 a pagan philosopher called Celsus wrote a book against the Christians, and in it he described an object he had obtained: a diagram belonging to a sect he had investigated. Seventy years later Origen answered him line by line, and because Origen answered by quoting, we have Celsus. And because Origen went and got a copy of the thing himself, which he says took considerable effort, we have a second-hand description of a first-hand object.
What he describes, in the sixth book of Against Celsus, is a chart. Circles within circles, an upper and a lower region divided by a barrier, a great encircling figure named as Leviathan, the soul of all things, and the seven rulers of the lower heavens, each with a name and an animal face. A lion. A bull. An amphibious or serpentine thing. An eagle. A bear. A dog. An ass. And with them, formulas: what the soul says as it passes each gate, addressed to the ruler by name, asserting its right of way.
Origen reports the passwords in order to condemn them. He is a hostile witness, working from a copy, describing a visual object in prose, for readers who could not see it, in a polemic where making it look ridiculous is the point. Every scholarly reconstruction since is a reconstruction of his summary, not of the diagram. And there is no diagram. No copy, no fragment, no later manuscript, nothing.
So this is the purest gap in the series. Not a damaged text but a described object, known entirely through two men who wanted it discredited. What we do not have is the document from the inside: the version written for the person actually using it.
The reconstruction
1 To the one who holds this sheet, and to no one standing behind him:
2 You will be stopped seven times. Not once, and not at the end. This is the first thing they teach wrongly outside, that there is a single judgement. There are seven, and they are administrative.
3 Do not be brave at the gates. Bravery is a thing done in front of others and there is no one there. Be exact.
4 Each ruler will ask you a question that is not the question. Behind the question there is a claim, and it is always the same claim: you are mine, because I made the part of you that is answering. You do not argue with the claim. You decline the ownership and pass. Arguing is how the night is lost.
5 At the first gate stands the lion-faced, and he asks by what right you rise. Do not answer by your deeds. He keeps the ledger of deeds and he will win. Say: I do not come by right. I come because the light in me is not on your inventory, and was never yours to lend.
6 At the second stands the bull-faced, who is patient, and who will simply wait, and waiting is his whole method, for most souls become bored and go back down of their own accord and call it a decision. Say nothing. Continue. He has no other move.
7 At the third stands the serpent, who speaks well, and who will agree with you. This is the dangerous gate. He will tell you that you are correct and advanced and that the ones below did not understand you. Say: I am not here to be flattered by a doorway. [ 2 lines illegible in this copy ]
8 At the fourth stands the eagle-faced, and he is far above and sees the whole of your life at once, and he will show it to you, and it will be true, and it will be arranged to make you despair. Say: you have shown me the shape and called it the meaning. Stand aside.
9 At the fifth stands the bear, and this one does not speak. It holds. It is the grip of the body, the appetite that has followed you up, and it will not be reasoned with. Give it the thing it came for, which is your attention, once, fully, and then withdraw the attention, and it falls away, for it has no other food.
10 At the sixth stands the dog-faced, who guards the boundary and who was, at one time, on your side. He is loyal to the house you are leaving. He will name the people you are leaving in it. Say their names back to him, all of them, and do not flinch, and say: I am not abandoning them. I am going ahead of them. The dog can tell the difference and will let you by, and it is the only gate that lets you by out of kindness.
11 At the seventh stands the ass-faced, whom the outsiders laugh at, and whose face is the reason they laugh at the whole of this sheet. He is the ruler of foolishness and he is the last gate, and he is the strongest of the seven, and now you understand why he is drawn as he is. Say: let me be a fool. I have been one all evening and I intend to continue. And he will step aside, having no purchase on a man who has agreed to look ridiculous.
12 Then there is the encircling one, whose tail is in his mouth, and about him there is nothing to say and nothing to be said to him. He is not a gate. He is the fact that the whole arrangement is inside something. [ approx. 8 lines illegible ]
13 Concerning the drawing itself. Do not sell it. Do not show it to a philosopher, because he will describe it in a book, and a description of a diagram is a lie shaped like a diagram, and it will outlive the diagram, and then men will argue for a thousand years about a thing none of them has seen.
14 Concerning the words. They are not power. A word has never opened anything. They are what you say in order to hear yourself refuse, and refusing is the act, and the words are only the shape you pour it into so that you do not forget it under pressure.
15 Concerning failure. Most will fail at the second gate, out of boredom, and at the sixth, out of love. Both are honourable. Come again tomorrow. It is a ladder, not a trial.
What we invented, and what we did not
Attested and sourced above: the diagram existed as a physical object in the second century. Celsus described it and Origen answered him at length in the sixth book of Against Celsus, reporting circles and a barrier, the great encircling figure named as Leviathan, the seven rulers with animal faces including a lion, a bull, an eagle, a bear, a dog and an ass, and formulas addressed to each ruler by name at the moment of passing. The idea of a soul ascending and being challenged at successive levels, with the correct thing to say written down in advance, is thoroughly attested across the period, including in the Books of Jeu with their seals and passwords, and in the Gospel of Mary’s ascent, which is the subject of the second entry in this series.
Extrapolated: the assignment of a psychological function to each face. Origen gives names and animals, not meanings. The meanings are ours, built to fit the animals, and any resemblance to what the Ophites actually believed is a coincidence we would very much enjoy.
Invented outright: the entire document, every password in it, the instruction not to show it to a philosopher, verse 14 and verse 15. The Ophites left no operator’s manual. Nobody did. That is the hole.
What the invention argues: read verse 14 again and then go and read our piece on CE5 and the ritual-magic ancestry of modern contact protocols. The structure is not remotely new. Prepare in advance, ascend or attune through stages, meet an intelligence, have the right formula ready, come back with something. Second-century Alexandria, John Dee’s angelical tongue, the Golden Dawn, the 1970s channelling boom, a field in Joshua Tree at two in the morning with a group doing tones. The gate passwords change. The diagram is the same diagram. And every version of it, including this invented one, keeps quietly admitting that the real work happens in the operator rather than in the words, right before somebody publishes the words.
